When A Baby Is Born (choir and brass band)
This is a setting of one of my Christmas carols, for SATB choir and brass band. This carol is possibly my most popular, and has been performed in the UK, USA and across Europe, so it seemed appropriate to set it for band and choir. Sometimes I set other people’s texts but in this instance I wrote the words as well as the music.
Often at Christmas, bands perform joint concerts with choirs. Not only is it a pleasing combination but it makes commercial sense — each ensemble doubles its audience at a stroke. Often these concerts take the form of one group followed by the other — interval — one group followed by the other.
By composing pieces like this I hope to give the Musical Directors of both ensembles more choice and flexibility. I have also tried to do this with my rather longer 3-movement work ‘The Twelve Keys of Christmas‘, for which I have prepared choral parts to accompany the band arrangements.
